World Celebrates as Local Charity
Boogies
People with a disability, their family, friends and
carers are gearing up for some serious celebration as the world plans to
focus its attention on diversity and ability, rather than any lack
thereof.
While International Day of People with a Disability will
be celebrated around the globe on December 3, New South Wales will host
over 150 events throughout November and December as part of a state-wide
campaign, Don‟t DIS my ABILITY.
New Horizons, a local community-based organisation that
provides employment, accommodation and support services for people with
a disability, is planning to turn up the heat at an event it will hold
at North Ryde in November.
“A fancy dress dance with a 70's disco twist” is how New
Horizons‟ Julie Hillier described the event. "We wanted to do something
light-hearted and fun.”
“We employ around 70 people with a disability at our
packaging facility at North Ryde. When we asked the team for
suggestions, a dance was popular from the start. Fancy dress also got a
lot of support” Julie added.
In the end it was decided to combine both ideas and
„Don‟t DIS my discoABILITY‟ was born.
“Events like this offer members of our community who
have a disability the opportunity to let their hair down and have some
fun. It's a chance to hang out with mates, meet new people, get down and
boogie… all part of living a healthy, active and fulfilling life” Julie
said.
